The Carolina Shag

A gentleman recently asked me if I knew how to shag, and I was at first all, ahem? Until I realized he was referring to the Carolina shag, which is fact a fluid, foot based, and quite civilized dance. Like most times that I’m asked yes or know questions, I at first replied YES! And then tried to figure out if my answer was actually right or true. And then I remembered that I actually have done said dance, at swing dancing nights downtown in High School, in that big weird maybe old post office building where that one time, Matchbox 20 played and I waited in the Rain for Rob Thomas to sign my sandwich which I thought would be funny but then he went out another door and I ate the sandwich anyway. As I was remembering the dance, I became curious of it’s origins and turns out it started in the 40’s in Carolina Beach, just north of where my family reunions every year. It was one of the first social thing that brought black and white people in North Carolina together, as seen in the spectacular pic above, in which the younguns are perhaps taking the out the civilized and foot based part.  Younguns, I hear you and I WILL MEET YOU THERE.
