I can’t stop thinking about what Louis CK said on Conan about cell phones, and how right he is in terms of why we’re so attached to them, and  so I transcribed it for us:
“You need to build an ability to just be yourself and not being doing something. That’s what the phones are taking away. Is the ability to just sit there.  That’s being a person. Underneath everything in your life — there’s that empty. That thing. That forever empty. That knowledge that it’s all for nothing, that you’re alone. And sometimes when things clear away, you’re not watching anything, you’re in your car, and you’re like, oh no, here it comes, that I am alone, and it starts to visit on you. This sadness. Life is tremendously sad. Just by being in it. And so youre driving and you go ahhh (reaches for phone), that’s why we text and drive. Pretty much 100% of people text and drive, and everybody’s murdering each other with their cars. But people are willing to risk taking a life and ruining their own because they don’t want to be alone for a second because it’s too hard.”
