Bobbie wants to go look at the Halloween decorations in the neighborhood, she’s scared of them so she wants to see them. We stop in front of some minions and she stares at them and says, ‘Oh my gosh. That’s so EMBARRASSING.’ And it is, sort of, because isn’t filling something with air and sticking it in your yard sort of silly, but is embarrassing the right word, like does she think the owners of the house have embarrassed THEMSELVES with their effort? I ask her, do you know what embarrassing means? She thinks for a minute then says to me, why don’t YOU say. And in the soft glow of the minions eyes, I wonder how to define the word embarrassing, I think of being walked in on while changing into my bathing suit, and telling the woman I don’t have money to give her when she was just trying to reach for a newspaper, all of my life’s most embarrassing moments play behind my eyes. I’ll tell you later, I say, and we wander up to the next house, to see how the owner has embarrassed themselves.
