Last year, when we opened the Notebook musical on Broadway, we didn’t get the critical reception we’d wanted, and isn’t it embarrassing to admit you want to be liked, but don’t we all? But it was crushing, upsetting, and humbling. Something we were told, and told ourselves, to get through that time, is that the show would do really well on tour. Sure enough, our intrepid producers organized and announced a national tour of the show in conjunction with our closing announcement. The tour officially opened Friday night in Cleveland and I knew I had to be there, even though I’m on a fairly remote island and in production, not just to squeeze Ingrid’s leg during the really magical parts, but also to heal. The show is pure love and we felt it, I felt the show connecting to the audience in a way I always dreamt of, I felt like we were all holding each other. In front of Ingrid and I, a couple in their 80s held hands the whole show, her helping him turn up his hearing aid. When the show ended, they turned to each and kissed. Maybe we didn’t get the pat on the head we wanted, but I think time will reveal we got something even Better, something More. COME SEE US ON THE ROADDDDDDDDD!
