I love the moment when you realize that you and a new friend you’re just getting to know perhaps already live inside of each others’ brains. Take last night, when I went to see a play with a new lady friend, Tricia, a fellow writeress. After intermission, we settled back into our seats. She spotted an apple in her bag.

New friend: Oh man, I was gonna eat this apple at intermission! Think it’s too late?

Me: Probably.

A moment.

New Friend: I don’t want to say it.

Me: Say what?

New Friend (sort of ashamed):….I missed my apple-unity.

Me: FRIENDS FOR ALL OF LIFE?

New Friend: OKAY.
