Above

My favorite thing to do when I’m in a new city is to get as high up above it as I can and then stand there and stare at it and wait for profound thoughts. I also call this ‘exercise.’ Today I hiked up to Arthur’s seat, a point located atop a massive hill just on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It rained a bit, I stopped a few times, but it was magnificent. I stood there and waited for epiphanies, but instead mostly just thought of that time I was in a Martin McDonough play in college, Cripple of Inishmaan, and I had to do my own age make up with eye liner and how I just sort of drew purple lines all over my face and how soon, far but soon, I will not have to draw purple lines all over my face, I will instead just Have them.
