The actor who’s Number 1 on the call sheet is often called the Number 1 on the show, because humans love to rank things. This person oftentimes sets the tone for the entire production. If you have a Number 1 who’s, say, unkind, or doesn’t want to be there, or anti-social, or doesn’t eat food, this in fact trickles down to the rest of the cast and crew. But then sometimes you get a Number 1 who’s instead, say, Jen Garner, who is patient and generous and hilarious and accessible, who plays her saxophone on set just for fun and bakes blueberry buckle for everyone, who sends constant coffee trucks for the crew, who rides her bike around the lot waving to the tour buses like a animatronic version of herself, who says good morning to the background people, each one of them. We wrapped our LA work last night and she wrote everyone this gorgeous note, I’ll leave it here. Could I give her a number higher than 1? Not 2. Is it zero, ten million? Number lucky, lucky number, number everything.
