Notes

I dream I get a Note from a higher up: You must put your grandmother Roberta in this episode. I say to them, but my Grandma Roberta has been dead for many years, and they say I don’t care, you must find her, and put her in it. So I have no choice but to go to heaven and look for her. I don’t have to look far, she’s working in a sweet little thrift store that she opened once she Arrived. Her hair’s a little darker and her nose is a little sharper, but she’s very much the same as the last time I saw her. She’s happy to see me, if not a little confused, what for a TV show? and You need me to do what? I beg her to come with me, I got a note, I need you to come back to earth and be in this episode, I’ll explain later, we need to go. She gets her purse, and we journey back to earth, to a tiny theater in the west village with charming dirty floors and walls, where I once had a one act produced in 2006. I lead Roberta to a chair behind a long table, and hand her a script. She’s still confused, but sweet and willing, she blinks at her co-stars and the reading begins. When it’s done, the Higher up passes by my seat. Sighs heavily. Still not good enough. We’ll get to work Monday fixing it. And goes. The actors have left and everyone is gone, everyone’s left their little notes and programs on their folding chairs. It’s just Roberta and I. It’s good to see you, honey. And despite the madness of chasing a note, spinning as I try to please, weary from protecting my words, I sit there for a moment with her. It’s good to see you too. She reaches for her purse. Now sweetie, I’d like to go home.
