Remember when you’re little and there’s a snapshot of a starving kid on the fridge, with flies in the remnants of his oatmeal, the one bowl of oatmeal your parents’ ten cents a week gets him, plus also shoes, and as soon as you’re tall enough you find yourself looking into his eyes feeling the first tinges of white guilt, which send you straight to the trash can to fish out and eat the rest of that weird bagel you threw away, even though your mom KNOWS not to serve you bagels, because you’re convinced that bugs crawl out of the holes inside of them and into your mouth?
WELL! I have kind of creepily adopted this incredible couple. Not really, but I’ll be sponsoring them a bit financially as they go on a missions trip to South Africa. I heard their story a few weeks ago in church and felt instantly connected to and inspired by them. Not just cause they’re young and cute and from the South, but because they’re incredibly focused and driven. She’ll be working with youth, helping them learn skills for future jobs like photography, video editing, etc, and he’ll be researching air pollution’s affect on clouds. Scott and Sheldon: God speed! And let us toast our imaginary friendship and good work upon your return, in that imaginary bar in my mind.
